Uploading an image for someone else
[edit]I am new to the process of uploading media. The case I’m working on is as follows:
I contacted the subject of a new Wikipedia article to ask if they had any images of themselves they’d be willing to let Wikipedia use on the top of that article.
They replied with two images, which I then saved to my own device.
The questions that I have are
- if I can assume from this that they have given a licence to use it or if I need to more thorougly discuss this with them. (And which licence to use/assume.)
- What I should then fill in while uploading, and more importantly, if I can change this later. The images have limited context about the location and I am sure I could ask the subject to provide more context, but I would prefer to first upload the images and add this context later.
- If there is a way for me to protect the privacy of the subject/author of the image. While I think the images need to be given context (location) I have not asked the subject if they are aware that metadata from the image could be used somehow against them or the person who took the photos. (One of the images is of the subject at a demonstration and I could imagine the subject having concerns about the police/government or political opponents/trolls using the metadata (in investigations) against him)
I might have more questions, but these are the things I ran into while reading the Wikipedia page on uploading images.
Thanks very much to anyone who can help.

- @Slomo666: Please read Commons:Uploading works by a third party. If you still have questions after that, come back here. - Jmabel ! talk 23:32, 7 November 2025 (UTC)
- On your specific questions:
- No, you can never "assume" a license.
- You can edit information after uploading, happens all the time.
- If by "metadata" you mean the EXIF data in the photo, there are ways to suppress that, but before I go into that please look at the page I linked and see whether you think it is likely that you can get the license(s) you will need. - Jmabel ! talk 23:38, 7 November 2025 (UTC)
- Ok well it’s my fault then. I asked them if and what could be used. (A bit similar to the mistake mentioned in the page you linked) I’m pretty sure they’d agree to licence it, because they sounded excited enough about the idea (maybe also just excited to hear that they have a Wikipedia page haha) but I will just have to bother them again to ask permission.
- Do you have advice for how to handle this? Because I get the feeling they are quite busy and I don’t want to talk their ears off. Is it possible for them to upload and licence the thing on the commons website directly? I doubt they’d want to make an account just for this, but if a temporary account (do you have those here? Enwiki has them now) is sufficient, that would save both of us a lot of hassle I think and I could just point them in the right way. Slomo666 (talk) 00:13, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Slomo666: We'll be starting temporary accounts in a few days, but they do not allow uploading. There is nothing at all difficult about creating an account (as you probably know, since you have one).
- The issue, though, is that a license has to come from the copyright-holder of the image, and nothing you say above suggests that would be the same person as the subject of the image.
- The people at
Commons:WikiProject Permission requestsCommons:Permission requests may be able to help you out. - Jmabel ! talk 06:08, 9 November 2025 (UTC)- Thank you.
- I think the link you gave is outdated, but I see there is a link to another one there.
- Also, kind of a separate thing, but I took a photograph recently of several public figures/people and I would like to upload that, (so it can be split or used in its entirety) but I’m not sure if and what kind of permissions I need for that. (I myself took the photo using my own device to be clear). Is there a page you know where I can find this information? Slomo666 (talk) 10:37, 10 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Slomo666 You don't need anyone's permission for that. On your original question, one practical solution is if your article subject does something like this [1] on a confirmed social media or personal website. If they do, you or anyone else can then upload the pic on Commons: File:Knowa De Baraso Photo.jpg. It doesn't have to be that license, but it must one of the ones Commons accepts. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:47, 10 November 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks.
- Do you really think I don’t need to ask permission from the people in the photograph or from the venue? (I doubt the actual woodwork on the venue is copyrighted considering it’s several centuries old, but I am mostly concerned about the people) Slomo666 (talk) 19:21, 10 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Slomo666: A person has no copyright interest in a photo of which they are the subject, only a personality rights interest (the details of which vary wildly from one country to another). I don't think you've said anything about what country this was. The venue itself also has no copyright interest for a "several centuries oldseveral centuries old" interior, but if you entered on a ticket that explicitly bars commercial photography then there could be a separate issue under contract law. (I am not a lawyer, speaking only from my knowledge as an experienced and widely traveled photographer.) - Jmabel ! talk 22:32, 10 November 2025 (UTC)
- Also one small note: if the image is uploaded on social media, it will usually be compressed, meaning a lower resolution. The licence would necessarily assume the lower resolution is licenced, and not the original image, I think.

- @Slomo666: There are very few instances in which anyone can offer a license for a compressed image and not for a higher-rsolution image. It is rare that the higher-resolution image would contain any copyrightable creative expression not visible in the lower-resolution image. - Jmabel ! talk 22:35, 10 November 2025 (UTC)

[edit]I found images I would like to upload that are listed as cc-by-sa on another website, but no date is provided. Is there any workaround for this? Metallurgist (talk) 23:54, 7 November 2025 (UTC)

?. Or even specify a range of years if you have some idea of that (see Template:Other_date#Examples). ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 00:52, 8 November 2025 (UTC)- Thanks. I do have a minimum year. Metallurgist (talk) 00:58, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- Hi Metallurgist. If you can provide a link to the specific images, then someone might be able to give you a more specific answer. Do you suspect anything like COM:LL when it comes to the image licensing? If, for example, the images are old photos that pre-date the Internet and COM:CC licensing, and the website hosting them is some personal blog, social media account or a website that looks a bit sketchy (i.e. it doesn't look like it's under the control of the image's original copyright holder), then being cautious and trying to find out more about the image's en:provenance (a en:reverse image search, emailing the site's operator, etc.) would, in my opinion, be wise. If the images, on the other hand, look like official photos from some of sort of official website (company, government, school, media organization, etc.), then perhaps they did originate with whoever owns the site and their licensing has a better chance of being valid. In that case, though, you could still try emailing whoever controls the site and ask for more information about the images and their licensing. In general, the more you can find out about an image's provenance the better because it's the uploader of a file who's ultimately expected to meet COM:EVID. Now, not knowing the exact date an image was created doesn't automatically mean it's not OK for Commons, and in somes cases a rough estimate (e.g. using wikt:circa) might be OK; in combination with other factors, however, the lack of a verifiable date could be another cause for concern about the validity of the license. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:18, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Marchjuly Its from Numista, which is a coin collector database, user-edited like Wikipedia, but a little higher bar to entry, and obviously more niche. Some images I have noticed are cc-by-sa, some are not. They all seem to be attributed to something. I dont suspect anything wrong, they just dont record the upload date. [2] Metallurgist (talk) 20:06, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- If the photos are of currency, you might want to take a look at c:COM:Currency since the copyright law on currency can vary from country to country. Such photos could be considered COM:DW, which means there are two copyrights that need to be considered: the first would be with the copyright status of the photographed currency and the second would be with the copyright status of the photo itself. If Polish currency is protected by copyright under Polish copyright laws (which seems to be the case per COM:CUR Poland), then no photos of it can be uploaded to Commons regardless of who takes the photo unless (even if licensed in accordance with COM:L) because of the copyright on the currency itself; it's possible perhaps that a photo taken by the Polish government itself that has been licensed in accordance with COM:L could be OK since an argument could be reasonably made that the Polish government, as the copyright holder of both the currency and the photo, knew what it was doing when it released the photo under such a license. For reference, if the currency isn't protected by copyright, either by statute or some other reason, however, then anyone should, in principle, be able to uploaded their own photos of it to Commons as long as the photo's licensed in accordance with COM:L; in such a case, the file would most likely need separate licenses for the photographed currency and the photo. If what you posted about the National Bank of Poland is accurate, then the bank not allowing commercial re-use of it's photos is too restrictive for Commons per COM:LJ and such photos wouldn't be OK for Commons even if the currency itself wasn't protected by copyright. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:52, 8 November 2025 (UTC)

About copy rights
[edit]I am about to upload an Photograph of a person who has been deceased (1936). But I couldn't able to found that orginal source of that photo, but can find in some news articles but even in that, there is no copyright or credit information given below. So what can I do?. Obviously the orginal person in the photo is past for 60 years and it's free to use according to the copyright act... Mr.fakepolicy (talk) 20:35, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Mr.fakepolicy: Generally, the more you can find out about the en:provenence of a photo, the easier it becomes to assess the photo's copyright status. Copyright laws tend to vary by country (sometimes quite a lot), but in most cases it's the date a photo is first published which matters the most. If you can provide information about the country of first publication or maybe even a link to the photo itself (if the photo can be seen online), then someone might be able to give you a more specific answer. When it comes to photos, copyright status is often determined by the date of the death of the photographer, not the date of death of the subject of the photo; this is referred to as en:post mortem auctoris or p.m.a. For many countries a photo is still eligible for copyright protection for up to 70 years after the photographer's death, and the 70-year countdown begins on January 1 of the calendar year following the year the photographer died. Commons policy, however, requires that the content it hosts be OK under not only the copyright law of the country of first publication but also US copyright law (where the Commons servers are located). It's the licensing under US copyright law where things can get tricky for photos first published outside the US. So, it's quite possible that even though a photo might now be no longer eligible for copyright protection under the copyright laws of its country of first publication, it's still considered under such protection by US copyright law; in such a case, the photo would not be OK to upload to Commons. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:49, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
Replacing photo of deceased person
[edit]How can I change the photo of a recently deceased person more in keeping with their image (and used at their commemoration services)? Fbsmath-wiki (talk) 21:50, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- Hi Fbsmath-wiki. I'm assuming you want to change the image currently being used in an English or other language Wikipedia article written about this person. If that's not the case, then please clarify. If that's the case, though, someone might be able to give you a better answer if you either provide the name of the person the article is written about. For Commons purposes, though, unless you yourself took the photo and want to release it under a copyright license that meets Commons:Licensing, you will not be able to upload it to Commons without first providing some way of Commons verifying the consent of the person who did take the photo. There's some more information about this in Commons:Uploading works by a third party. Now, it's important to understand that the different language Wikipedias are separate projects with their own policies and guidelines regarding image use; they allow images uploaded to Commons to be used in their articles, but they also consider other things. English Wikipedia, for example, considers the encyclopedic value of the images used in it articles in addition to their copyright status. English Wikipedia articles aren't intended to be memorials per se, and this also applies to image use. So, a recent photo of the deceased used at their commemoration services might not be considered by some English Wikipedians as something that improves the typical reader's encyclopedic understanding of the deceased regardless of the photo's copyright status, and the currently being used photo might be seen as still having encyclopedic value. It's, therefore, possible that even if the photo you want to use turns out to be OK for Commons, it might not "replace" the current one but "coexist" with the current one in some way instead. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:23, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you. I read on wiki that it is suggested that the photo be representative of the thriving years of the subject. I was using a photo published by the university for sake of commemoration but at a slightly earlier phase than the wiki photo. The photo currently on wiki is not representing the thriving years and this was discussed with several scientists including one at the subjects university. Would I need to write to the university to ask for their approval?

- It would be really helpful to know more about the photo's en:provenance (particularly if it can be found somewhere online) and the name of the person the Wikipedia article is written about because such information could be used to better assess the photos copyright status. If you can get the copyright holder of the photo to give their COM:CONSENT (see COM:VRT for more details on how CONSENT can be given), then the photo should be OK for Commons. It's important to understand, though, that only the copyright holder gave give this consent, and the copyright holder is generally considered to be the photographer who took the photo. If an employee of the university took the photo as part of their job, then the university could be the copyright holder and the university's consent would probably be OK; on the other hand, if the university was just using a photo taken by someone else, then that person's consent would be needed. For reference, "consent" in this context means as described in COM:LJ: the copyright holder is basically giving advance permission for anyone anywhere in the world to download the photo from Commons at anytime and re-use for any purpose under very minimal restrictions. As for
I read on wiki that it is suggested that the photo be representative of the thriving years of the subject.
, I don't know where you read that. Of course, that's somewhat true, but it's not the only consideration given when determining which image to use. Image use on English Wikipedia, for example, needs to be in accordance with en:Wikipedia:Image use policy and whether that's the case will be given more weight than what several scientists or the university thinks should be the case. Finally, it's probably better if you log in to your account when posting on Commons because your IP address is publicly visible when you post while logged out. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:34, 8 November 2025 (UTC)- This is all very helpful. Uploading on someone else's behalf
[edit]I want to upload some images on behalf of a friend who is an artist. They are not technically skilled and do not have a Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons account, nor want one. The images are photos of their original artworks. The artist owns all rights to the original artworks. The images are photos of the artworks taken by professional photographers, and the photos' metada shows the copyright as the photographers'. However, the photographers have since formally assigned in writing all rights to their client, the artist. The artist is happy to apply a "Own work, attribution required, copyleft" (CC BY-SA 4.0) licence to the images.
- Can I upload the images on the artist's behalf?
- Is the source "Own work"?
- Who is the author, is it the artist who is granting the licence?
- Is there anything else I should do or be aware of?

[edit]Hi everyone, does anyone can help me to get the privileges to upload a PDF file .. even though I am a new user?
It says I had to make at least 100 edits .. but does anyone know how to make all those edits .. here in Wikimedia Commons?
For I was wondering, here is not as a common Wikipedia project .. where you can also edit some typos .. here you have to upload something, that is some files, right?
So, thanks in advance for anyone who could and wanted to help me, have a nice day

- @Ghbvhb: what is the nature of the PDF you want to upload? The reason we have that rule is that, overwhelmingly, new users who want to upload a PDF want to upload something that is actually out of scope. - Jmabel ! talk 22:42, 10 November 2025 (UTC)

- Please stay logged in (or log back in) while continuing a discussion.
- No one can have a copyright over (say) a 19th-century translation of the Bible, but (for example) the Revised Standard Version is in fact copyrighted in the U.S. and in many other countries.
- I assume we are talking about the work that Wikipedia calls Katha Upanishad.
- If this is an ancient text (the original Sanskrit or an old translation that is no longer copyrightd), and does not contain modern content (such as copyrighted illustrations) then it is, indeed, PD. You say it is on your laptop. What form is it in, and where did you get it from (since you obviously did not write it yourself)? - Jmabel ! talk 01:16, 12 November 2025 (UTC)

Deleting a redundant category
[edit]Hello. I am not entirely sure how one nominates a category for deletion on the Commons so I thought I could bring the issue up here so that more experienced users could perhaps help with the matter. Uploading a screenshot of a newspaper-advertisment
[edit]Hi! I'm wondering if I can upload a screenshot of a old newspaper-advertisment from 1960. De ad is placed by a sportsclub and the screenshot will be placed at the wikipage of that sportsclub. HeleenT (talk) 11:19, 11 November 2025 (UTC)
- Hi HeleenT. It all depends on whether the advertisement meets COM:L. All of your edits, other than this one here, appear to have been made to Dutch Wikipedia. Is the advertisment you want to upload from a Dutch newspaper (i.e. a newspaper published in the Netherlands)? If it is, then you're going to need to figure out its copyright status per Commons:Netherlands. If it isn't (i.e. a newspaper published in some other country), then please clarify. Is it possible to see the ad somewhere online? If you can provide some more information about the en:provenance (or nl:provenance) of the ad, someone might be able to give you a more specific answer.Anayway, if the newspaper is indeed a Dutch newspaper, it looks like the third, fourth and fifth bullet points of Commons:Netherlands#Standard terms might be applicable to something such as this. In any of those cases, an advertisement that was first published in Dutch newspaper in 1960 might eligible for copyright protection under Dutch copyright law until at least January 1, 2031, when it will enter into the COM:Public domain. This means it's probably not OK to upload to Commons until that date unless copyright holder COM:CONSENT can be obtained. Since the ad was place by the sportsclub, it's possible its a case of en:corporate authorship with the sportsclub being the copyright holder. If the ad has a known author or authors, then it's looks like it might be eligible copyirght protection for 70 years after the death of the last surviving author, which could mean a longer wait until the ad enters into the public domain. Finally, Commons policy requires that the content it host be acceptably licensed according to the copyright laws of the country of first publication and the copyright laws of the United States. If the ad is still protected under Dutch copyright law, it almost certainly would be still protected under US copyright law, unless perhaps the ad also appeared in an American newspaper around the same time. Figuring out the Dutch part of the equation first, though, will make it much easier to sort out the US part. -- Marchjuly (talk) 13:59, 11 November 2025 (UTC)
- Hi Marchjuly, thanks for your reply! The ad is Dutch indeed. And yes, the sportsclub could be the copyright holder indeed, that is why I hesitated. I will check the pages you send. HeleenT (talk) 08:52, 13 November 2025 (UTC)

[edit]Can i upload a youtube video of Ronald Reagan addressing the enactment of The Family Support Act of 1988? Avwmontgomery (talk) 15:30, 11 November 2025 (UTC)
- It depends on whom filmed that video. Ruslik (talk) 19:32, 11 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Aywmontgomery: There's some information about this in Commons:YouTube, but it largely depends on the type of licensing the video has been released under by whoever uploaded it to YouTube. YouTube allows those who upload original content to release their content under either the standard YouTube license (which is pretty restrictive) or under less restrictive Creative Commons license. Is this the video you're asking about? If it is, then click on "Show more" in the video's description and scroll down until you see "License". If it explicitly says something like "Creative Commons", then the video likely has been licensed in a way by its uploader that's OK for Commons per Commons:Licensing. If it says something different or doesn't say anything at all, then video most likely is released under a license that's too restrictive for Commons and shouldn't be uploaded. FWIW, the video I linked to looks like it's OK for Commons; however, how the video might end up being used after it has been uploaded is an entirely different question that's beyond the scope of Commons. If, for example, you want to use the video in some Wikipedia article, you will probably need to discuss the best way to do that on the talk page of the Wikipedia article where you want to use the video. Now, another important thing to consider is who the uploader is because only copyright holders can release their original content under Creative Commons licensing, and the copyright holder is typically the original creator of the content. Since lots of people upload content to YouTube that's been created by others, you need to be careful when it comes to YouTube and Commons, even when it looks like its licensed in an acceptable way. If you're able to find original content of Reagan giving speeches uploaded to official YouTube channels associated with the Reagan family or his estate that has been release under a Creative Commons license, then there's a good chance such content is OK for Commons; anything else probably shouldn't be considered OK and shouldn't be uploaded, or you should at least ask about it at COM:VPC or here at the help desk first. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:08, 12 November 2025 (UTC)
- Unless, of course, it can be shown definitely to be made by an employee of the U.S. federal government, which would automatically place it in the public domain. Also, if it can be shown to have been published without notice before 1 March 1989, and with no copyright registration within 5 years of publication, that would also place it in the public domain. (However, with few ways to publish videos in that era, that last is unlikely.) - Jmabel ! talk 03:07, 12 November 2025 (UTC)

How do I delete a file
[edit]The instructions are not clear on how to delete an image I uploaded. Isn't there a just simple delete button if I am the copyright holder? EleanorSchrader (talk) 05:32, 13 November 2025 (UTC)
- @EleanorSchrader: Only a Commons administrator can delete a file, but you or anyone else can request or nominate a file for deletion. If you uploaded the file, you can tag the file for speedy deletion per criteria G7 by going to the file's page, clicking on "Edit" and then adding the speedy deletion template syntax db-author at the top of the editing window. Once you've added the syntax, click on "Show Preview" to check whether the template is displaying properly and then click "Publish changes" if everything looks OK. This will add the file to a list of other similarly tagged files awaiting administrator review. An administrator will eventually review the file and should delete it when they do. However, you need to do this within seven days of uploading the file. If you uploaded the file more than seven days ago, you will need to nominate the file for deletion instead. You can do this by following the instructions in Commons:Deletion requests or by clicking on "Nominate for deletion" in the left sidebar on the file's page. The sidebar method will probably be much easier for you to follow if you've never nominated a file for deletion before because it's more automated. Anyway, after clicking on "Nominate for deletion", a window will open up where you can enter the reason why you want to file deleted. Generally, files only get deleted for the reasons given in Commons:Deletion policy; so, you might want to look at that page before beginning the process. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:10, 13 November 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you. ~2025-33299-85 (talk) 21:09, 13 November 2025 (UTC)
- @EleanorSchrader: Marchjuly may have made this sound more complicated than it is, but when you uploaded the two files you uploaded roughly a month ago, you asserted that you were the copyright-holder and were releasing them into the public domain. A declaration like that would not mean much if you could just come back at any future time and say, "No, I don't release these." If you were not the copyright-holder (which I see someone is claiming for one of the files), please come clean and ask for deletion as a copyright violation. - Jmabel ! talk 19:08, 13 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: The reverse Google search is quite clear in that regard: there are several examples of older online publications, predating the Commons upload (and I'm sure that it's the same image. While Google did declare more images as "identical" during my check, the lampshade and other details were different. But on two Instagram links at least, the lampshade and the leafy plant are visually identical to the Commons hosted file). How to mark image uploaded by someone else as AI generated?
[edit]I noticed that this image https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Swedish_Toscakaka.jpg is pretty clearly AI generated with fabricated metadata. There are a bunch of strange things going on in the image, also an Iphone 7 could never take a photo with depth of field like this has, and it's in 4096x4096 resolution (4x upscale of 1024x1024 which is the typical AI generated image resolution and aspect ratio).

I have a problem.
[edit]I have a problem. So over the course of the last two months I have been gathering photos for NSW rolling stock articles with many of them sourced from an elderly friend of mine and a few others and now those photos are facing deletion. My friend was happy for me to use these photos and so where the others I got photos from. This is especially problematic since many of these were taken before I was born and some depict carriages that have long since been scrapped. It worth noting that none of the people I got them from have time to upload these photos themselves. What can I do? Chester H. Winnfield (talk) 07:07, 14 November 2025 (UTC)
- Hi Chester H. Winnfield. Do you know who took the photos? Your friends? Someone else? If your friends took the photos, you should be OK by following the guidance given in Commons:Uploading works by a third party#If you need to obtain a license for copyrighted work. If you don't know who took the photos, then things get a bit trickier to sort out. The reason this is important is because the person who takes a photo is generally considered to be the copyright holder of the photo. So, if your friends took the photos, then all Commons really needs is to verify they're willing to give their COM:CONSENT for their photos to be uploaded to Commons in accordance with Commons:Licensing. If your friends didn't take the photos themselves, then you, your friends and Commons need to figure out who did to see whether there's any way for Commons to keep the photos. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:47, 14 November 2025 (UTC)
- Most of them came from friends of mine and one from a friend of one of my friends as well. There are two that are uncredited because the people I got them from didn't know who took them. Chester H. Winnfield (talk) 00:13, 15 November 2025 (UTC)
- If your friends took the photos, and they're OK with releasing them under the kind of copyright licensing described in Commons:Licensing, then all that Commons really needs is to have some formal way of verifying your friends' willingness to do so. One way your friends can do this is by emailing the Wikimedia Volunteer Response Team (VRT). They can use the email template in COM:CONSENT as a guide. Another possiblility if your friends published the photos somewhere online (e.g. one of their social media accounts) prior to you uploading them to Commons would be for your friends to add an acceptable license to the photo where it can be seen online as explained in COM:VRT#When contacting VRT is unnecssary?. Either verfication of coyright holder consent by email or through some type of publication prior to the photos being uploaded to Commons could be all that's needed. -- Marchjuly (talk) 09:10, 15 November 2025 (UTC)
- One of my friends is Roy Howrath who I got the photos of TF6010 and ETB6037 from that were on SETS website. Does that count? As for Greg and Joe I don't know Joe well enough to know if he has social media and Greg has a lot of things to do and I don't think he would have time to either send that email. While he has social media, he hasn't posted any of his photos that are on here. If he was to give his permission through email, could he grant permission for all his photos at once? Chester H. Winnfield (talk) 09:42, 15 November 2025 (UTC)
- If one of your friends has uploaded their photos to a website, and they've already or are able to make it clear on said site that their photos are released under a copyright license that Commons accepts (see Commons:Copyright tags and Commons:Licensing/Justifications for some more information on the types of licenses which are OK for Commons), the providing of a link to said site showing the photo and the copyright license should be OK for verification purposes (as long as the original publication of the photo predates its upoading to Commons). If your other friends want to email Wikimedia VRT to give their consent for their photos, then that should work too. There needs to be someway to directly connect the copyright holder to their photos and then some way to verify copyright holder consent. If one of your friends wants to give their consent for multiple photos, then I'm pretty sure they can do so as long as they're the copyright holder of all the photos: they can't give consent for photos taken by someone else. They can just mention the file name of each photo they want to give their consent for in their email. You probably should advise your friends to use an "official" email address if they've got one because it might be easier for VRT to verify they're who they say they are. There's more on this in the very last paragraph of COM:CONSENT. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:09, 15 November 2025 (UTC)
- This honestly hurts my head. Chester H. Winnfield (talk) 13:15, 15 November 2025 (UTC)

- Most of them came from friends of mine and one from a friend of one of my friends as well. There are two that are uncredited because the people I got them from didn't know who took them. Chester H. Winnfield (talk) 00:13, 15 November 2025 (UTC)

[edit]How to add a link to a section of an article on Wikimedia Commons ~2025-33696-18 (talk) 05:00, 15 November 2025 (UTC)
- @~2025-33696-1: If I understand you correctly, you are asking how to link from Wikimedia Commons, to a section of a Wikipedia article. (If you meant something else, please reword.) There are a few ways to do it; here are four examples:
- History of London#Early history produces History of London#Early history. This is specific to the English-language Wikipedia.
- History of London#Early history produces Early history of London. This is specific to the English-language Wikipedia.
- :en:History of London#Early history produces en:History of London#Early history. This can work with any language Wikipedia.
- Early history of London produces Early history of London. This can work with any language Wikipedia.

I think I got it. First you have to create a redirecting page like uk:Повітряні сили Єгипту which contains #REDIRECTЗбройні сили Єгипту#Повітряні сили, then you can add this redirecting page to d:Q1351405. --Achim55 (talk) 09:23, 17 November 2025 (UTC)

[edit]Can others see my work. Can I delete my work if someone uses it Talented12 (talk) 08:16, 15 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Talented12: yes, everything you do in Wikimedia is public for the entire world, including this conversation.
- You can set license terms, but you must allow others to use your work. This is the entire purpose of Commons. You also can't delete your own uploads (limited exception is made if you change your mind shortly (seven days) after upload). MKFI (talk) 08:50, 15 November 2025 (UTC)
- More precisely: yes, anyone can see and reuse your work. No, you cannot delete it, and even the 7-day grace period that MKFI mentions is not an entitlement, it is just a courtesy we generally grant. - Jmabel ! talk 23:34, 15 November 2025 (UTC)
- Also you must allow others to use modify and sell/use commercially your own work if you upload your own work. The only thing you can generally control is whether credit is required and whether the same license type is required. WikiGrower1 (talk) 02:53, 16 November 2025 (UTC)
Uploading an image file
[edit]I am trying to upload a new image to replace a wrong one in in entry about my Great Grandfather, Henry Irwin, Architect in India. After one attempt, a blank file appears to exist. It will not accept a new one as it tells me it is a duplicate of a file already uploaded, but I cannot delete or overwrite the first file. This my first attempt to edit a Wikimedia entry, and it is not proving a positive experience. Tom Carr 0 (talk) 15:24, 15 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Tom Carr 0: The overwriting is bound to a user right that you may not yet have (restricting the overwriting is a measure of protection against vandalism; the guideline is found at COM:OVERWRITE). I put a speedy deletion tag on the apparently defective file File:Henry Irwin Nov 1915.jpg. When it's gone, you should be able to try the upload again. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 16:43, 15 November 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks Grand-Duc, I will try that tomorrow.
- Tom ~2025-33853-67 (talk) 21:45, 15 November 2025 (UTC)
- This is still not working. I appear to have successfully uploaded the new image to Wikimedia Commons, but when I try to edit the Wikipedia page it tells me there is no file uploaded. However, if i try to upload a new image, it tells me there was an identical image that has been deleted, and I should check why. I know why it was deleted, you did it for me, but wikipedia will not let me upload an updated version.
- Why is this so difficult? Why should I waste my time trying to correct a simple and understandable mistake if Wikipedia is so awkward about it? Tom Carr 0 (talk) 13:13, 16 November 2025 (UTC)
- I don't know what's happening, Tom Carr 0. But I've seen that you activated the Wikimedia e-mail function. So, I'd suggest that you upload your image to Dropbox, Google files or whatever file hoster you fancy and mail me its link and the description through Special:EMailUser/Grand-Duc. I will then try the upload from my side. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 15:19, 16 November 2025 (UTC)
- Have just done that - hope this works!
- Tom Tom Carr 0 (talk) 20:15, 17 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Tom, please check whether File:Henry Irwin Nov 1915.jpg is good for you, now (I'd be glad if you could add something to the description or the like, so as to save in the version history that you're aware of that upload). The file you send me through your cloud was one without extension when I downloaded it, I had to manually add ".jpg". This may have been a source of irritation for the upload tool, but that's only a theory. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 20:51, 17 November 2025 (UTC)

[edit]I have an article that I wish to upload, with citations as required. I can not figure out how to upload the document for review/approval. Thank you for simple guidance as I am very new here. Fontsquared (talk) 21:40, 15 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Fontsquared: Wikimedia Commons (this site) does not host articles. You would have to contact the site you are asking about, and you don't say anything here that indicates what that would be.
- I'm not aware of any Wikimedia Foundation site that uploads articles. For Wikipedia, for example, articles must be written in wikitext (sometimes through use of a WYSIWYG editor) on the site itself. - Jmabel ! talk 23:37, 15 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Fontsquared If the article is in English, then as you know already, as a self declared paid editor on enWiki with concomitant restrictions on what you may and may not do you are constrained to work within Draft: space, and should use w:en:WP:AFC. But you are doing that already, so I cannot see the point of your asking your question when you know the answer already. 🇵🇸🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦🇵🇸 00:38, 16 November 2025 (UTC)

Eine kleine Nachtmusik, K.525 (Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus) - IMSLP
Wikieditor662 (talk) 02:02, 16 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Wikieditor662: seems reasonable, but of course no one here can vouch for a specific document being exactly what it is claimed to be. On any user-driven site, including this one, there is always the possibility of a fraudulent upload. All you really can do is be clear about source so that anyone with doubts can readily do their own process of validation. You should presumably categorize it under Category:Serenade, K.525 (Mozart), and we do not seem to have a copy of that document (or if we do it is miscategorized). - Jmabel ! talk 07:46, 16 November 2025 (UTC)

Removing other's comments
[edit]Is there a Commons rule similar to WP:TPO ("Removing others' comments is prohibited, except on one's own user talk page or if the comments violate scenarios outlined above.") written down somewhere? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:41, 17 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Gråbergs Gråa Sång: I've boldly re-added the removed comments with some minor formatting tweaks. It's was wrong for the other user to have removed the comments per COM:TALK#In general. In this case, the other person account is only a few days old; so, the removal was probably just a combination of being new and perhaps frustration. If the other user removes them again, you might try pointing out why this is wrong on their user talk page and ask them to self-revert or re-add them yourself. If they start getting rude, you can always bring their behavior up for discussion at COM:AN/U. -- Marchjuly (talk) 10:19, 17 November 2025 (UTC)

Some of my Maryland images were uploaded nearly 2weeks ago and have not shown up. Don’t know if I should be more patient and wait or upload again. Linda Roy Walls (talk) 08:53, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Linda Roy Walls: Thanks for uploading photos of historic sites! Volunteer Wikipedia editors update articles with photos from Wikimedia Commons. If you've uploaded photos for Wiki Loves Monuments, some of them are used within a few hours; others can take much longer. You can update the Wikipedia listings yourself if you'd like (and I encourage you to do so!). ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 10:15, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the insight Kevin! I was worried the images had been lost. I upload, they are accepted, but you are right. Some show in the NHP listings within a few hours and others are taking much longer. I often devote a cluster of days to uncovering structures with accurate locations that need photos, then getting those acquired. Some acquisitions take hours and a lot of courage to approach owners far down remote driveways and then ask permission to photograph, in an era where people seem to have become much more private. i couldnt find them in the search, and it also told me to "use the upload wizard if you dont", but according to the infographic on the front page of the upload wizard i cant upload it there either which is confusing
